WITHIN “EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY”

everything is temporary.Nothing is permanent.

Gender performance meets astrology in this mixed media collection.

The show was exhibited in tandem with delaney mcquown’s collection, hours later.

In this mixed media collection, the 12 main astrological signs and their connected behaviors are showcased in disjointed and abnormal diptychs. The first part of the diptych is the video, constantly moving and cycling. In the video, the models are wearing kitschy, literal mimetic body mantles of the symbols. These headpieces are ephemeral in nature—made loosely, like the diagnoses of each sign’s personality. The video segments work in parallel to the portraits, speaking to the nature and elemental triplicities of the sign. The portraits, however, are critical of the behaviors that the astrologers have denoted to each sign, separating certain behaviors based on gender. The portraits smash these supposed gender behaviors by pairing the wearer with a behavior denoted to the opposite sex. This is portrayed through androgynous clothing and gender norm-challenging poses.

The collection in whole is about the dualities between permanency and change. We are dynamic creatures, born with the ability to modify, grow, learn, and flourish. The pieces breed conversation about the boxes we put ourselves into based on factors that we can’t change about ourselves, like the day we were born. The mixed media pieces are personal to the artist, used as a therapeutic and investigatory tool to discover why relationships are temporary in nature, with references to the signs and his parents, former friends, and lost loved ones.
